IN DAVE'S WORDS ....
It was four years ago that I got the phone call that was to get me back on my bike and loving the bike again...
Dave McCall called me to ask me if I'd like to join Sean Kelly and coach the SportActive Cycle Camp in Majorca the next Spring.... WOULD I EVER ???? I was back on my bike like a shot and at that training camp fit and well...
Since then I have falllen in love with the bike again and have ridden many, many Sportives and enjoyed every one of them.
It is with immense sadness I learnt of Dave's untimely death in a race earlier this week. Words really fail me and I am totally shocked by the news. Dave was a big guy with a bigger heart. He was as straight as a dye and you always knew where you were with him. I trusted him implicitly and we had some great times at the Training Camps. When I left to go my own way last year, setting up my own Camp at Denia, he was so kind to me, wishing me well with my new venture and saying that if it didn't work out there would always be a place back at SportActive for me... Great, great guy !!
It just gives me another insight into just how short life is and of my own mortality. As did the crash I had in Denia this year.
You should live every day to the full and squeeze every last drop out of life. We are here for far too short a time and we need to make the most of it, for sure. If anyone out there has any talent... Grab it with both hands and try until your ears bleed to be the best you can.... NO-ONE KNOWS WHAT TOMORROW MIGHT BRING.... GO FOR IT !!!
