After a ten year lay off, I started cycling again to commute to work. The commuting reminded me of when I rode a ‘real road bike’ so I bought one and joined the local cycling club. After joining the club, I started racing in fourth category and really struggled to stay with the bunch. But, after a couple of months of working on my own I was able to ‘hang in’ there.
But, I needed to add more structure to my efforts, so I started a search for a coach and ran into Dave. I booked in for the ritual 4 hour session and completed the ramp test and agreed on some goals. I asked Dave how I went on the test - he said something akin to “…well…… it could be better…”Anyway after working with Dave for a year or so and working really hard on the program the changes are dramatic.
With Dave’s help I successfully suffered through the Dragon Ride 2008, Etape 2008 and many other club races. The other great thing is I lost 20 kgs without any form of diet – I just eat good food - and plenty of it if I feel like it.In late July 2008 I moved back home to Australia with my family. I spoke to Dave about continuing on with the program and talking on the email etc which has worked out well.
I joined the local cycling club racing in ‘C” grade and finally started to place in some races. The plans are to move up to ‘B’ grade next week – just because the ‘struggling’ is good fun. It was a great first year with Dave.
He has added a lot of structure to my efforts and provided a lot of invaluable guidance. I really do recommend Dave to anyone looking for a coach. He has an extraordinary knowledge of the sport (both track and road) and I really doubt you find anyone more excited about riding a bike. Oh, and also, go on one of the training camps if you really like the ‘struggle’.
