I was a rapid junior in the mid 80’s (riding 10’s to 12hours!). Since then, due to work, houses & family life, my cycling has been very on & off, probably more off than on.
The comeback (after the recent 5 years away) was 2005. The season was ok, but I had forgotten how to train & race. In the club I considered myself an ‘also ran’, finishing top 5 but not winning.
I contacted Dave in late 2005. I phoned & we met up. Following the consultation & ramp test, I joined ‘the team’, wow, THE Dave Lloyd was my coach! A coach that has been there & done it.
The weekly schedules were what I needed over the winter. I stuck to every one & what a difference this base mileage made. Dave was there if needed at the end of the phone anytime. He helped with guidance through any injury or illness, or any worry or niggle.
The training was a good mix, including the hill repeats (anyone who has done these will know that they are one of those things that you never look forward to but you know that when they are done you feel so much better, albeit a little tired!).
The race results came (what I was doing it all for). 3 of the 4 season targets were achieved (the last one wasn’t but it was close). Club race wins were numerous & the 10 - 20 year old p’bs were either beaten or were within a few seconds of that.
The social side was very team-like with the track days & training rides.
I only stopped working with Dave due to my personal work load in 2007, working & living away from home has meant the cycling has taken another step back into temporary retirement. However, I will be back & will call Dave again. If you haven’t done it, give it a go.
