I contacted Dave in November 2006 as I had taken up road racing that year but had finished the season with zero points! Naively I thought after being Welsh duathlon champion in 2003 that I could just cruise into road racing and climb the categories just like that.....how wrong I was! I was a bit disheartened so started looking for a coach. After a lot of research I found Dave Lloyds website and thought it was worth giving him a call. After a ramp test and inspiring consultation I decided to ask Dave to be my coach. I remember phoning him and saying, "You have my permission to push me as hard as you like".
I remember after the first weeks training lying on the sofa, knackered thinking how the hell am I going to keep this up but Dave encouraged me with the words "Keep the Faith, your body will adapt!" And it did as I just keep improving.
In my first road race with Dave and still Cat 4 (Tour of the Milburys, cat 2/3/4) I managed to bridge a 2 minute gap on my own from the bunch to the leaders and attacked with 4km to go. I won and couldn't believe it my first points and first win!
My next race with the Tour of Sussex and I came 2nd on every stage and came away with the yellow jersey (despite puncturing) and a Cat 2 licence. I've bagged some points in every race since and did my first Premier Calendar (Grand Prix of Wales) in August. Now I'm chasing a cat 1 licence with the confidence that next year I can be competitive in premier calendar races.
It's not just Dave's training that has brought me on, it's his whole attitude. He knows exactly what emotions you go through and what to say to when you've had a bad race. He gives you the confidence to take the race to your competitors and be aggressive. It's amazing what you can achieve with the right training and the right advice. Dave also leads by example and is a fantastic cyclist who's cleaning up in the domestic sportives showing the whipper snappers how to do it.
I really recommend Dave as a coach and unlike a lot of coaches Dave really does care about you as a person and has great pride in what his athletes achieve. Money well spent!!!!
Cheers
