1970 Eccleston Handicap

1970 Eccleston Handicap The early season Eccleston Handicap. A small race, but a good one. I was trying to get my 1st Cat licence at the time and really needed every point I could manage.

I set off in the scratch group and after a while we caught the front group and the break of 3 was formed, all from the Kirkby CC. Doug Dailey, Billy Whiteside and me ... I was regarded as the upstart in the club as my rise had been very fast. In any case Doug and Billy tried to work me over, attacking me one after the other ... NICE!

I really wanted the win, so in the end I got sick of chasing and attacked them, got away and won the race and got my 1st Cat! Doug found it very difficult to accept me, as he was the number one and I was a big threat to him.

He has never really got over it, which is a shame, as there will always come a time when you are going to get beaten by someone better. It happens to us all and it came to me too, obviously ... You have to accept the inevitable and get on with your life! ... I DID!
