1972 Mountain Time Trial
This pic was taken the day after I had finished my first ever stage race The Tour of Britain "Milk Race" in 7th place. It was taken in the Isle of Man and is the Mountain Time Trial. I was up at 4am and was off at 6am.
I am climbing Snaefell here and was in the process of winning the race and taking the course record from Jon Burnham. I was really flying after the Milk Race, to such an extent, I got up 2½ hours after the Mountain Trial and rode the Willaston Handicap.
I started in the scratch group and Phil Bayton and I got across alone to the front group and went straight past to catch a lone leader from Ireland. We stayed away to the finish and I was absolutely knackered in the sprint and finished 3rd ... Completely mad of course!
