This is a pic of me and my old pal Phil Bayton riding this most prestigious of Time Trials at the time.
It was an end of season 100 Kilometre 2-up TTT over a very demanding course. Phil and I had secured our invitation by being away in the first "Classic" of the season, the Milan- SanRemo alone for 4½ hours.
This was an outstanding Time Trial with the "tifosi" out in their hundreds of thousands. Phil got carried away and started too fast and suffered for it later, so I had to push him up the final climb as he had blown.
We still got a respectable 3rd place to Felice Gimondi and Fred Rodriguez ... Had a slight suspicion Rodriguez rode WELL above himself that day ... NO IDEA WHY OF COURSE!!
Great race though and brings back some wonderful memories.
