This was the National Professional 5,000 metres Pursuit Championship and the first of the 2 times I won it.
It was at this event that the "ugly" side of the sport came to me when one of my fellow pros tried to tamper with my drinking bottle. I had seen this and threw the thing away, luckily.
God knows what he had put in it ?! In any case I won through all the qualifying rounds and caught Jock Kerr in the final. The pic is of the rather elaborate medal ceremony for those days.
Although the organiser, Benny Foster had his critics, he did love some Razz matazz and it certainly brought the crowds in. He even attracted the TV, which was unheard of in those days ... Good on you Benny! I lapped it up, as I always did. I loved to win and you could say I was driven and second place was abject failure as far as I was concerned.
I never showed it and I always acted as the consummate professional, congratulating anyone who beat me throughout my career ... BUT I was a very bad loser ... VERY BAD!
