1975 The Paris - Roubaix

1975 The Paris - Roubaix What a crazy race and what a beautiful race ... Seven and a half hours of hell with 130 kilometres of cobbles in those days.

It poured down and I remember Barry Hoban saying "If you finish today, you can call yourself a bike rider!"

This pic was taken early on in the race after there had been a huge crash at the entrance to the first section of cobbles, and no wonder ... it was a WAR out there ... I got caught up in it and was left to chase all day.

I was determined to finish as I wanted to show bloody Barry Hoban I could do it. I passed SO many guys when I had got my rhythm back and learnt that you have to attack each cobbled section flat out in a big gear, so you actually "bounce" over them ... If you go too slow, your front wheel follows the gaps and you are on your backside ... I passed the likes of Thevenet and Poulidor and finally got into a three man chase with my team mate Jan Raas and Louis Verredt.

Jan was a great mentor for me and gave me a lot of help. We worked well together and finally entered Roubaix Stadium ... What a reception and what a feeling. I got carried away a bit as I was really a novice still. I bent down to do my toe-straps up tighter for the "sprint". Jan came alongside and said, "Dave, don't sprint!" Wise words, as you don't sprint for 22nd place ... We rolled in and it was such a great feeling to have finished such an amazing race.

I had become a "Bike Rider" that day!
